Document what changed

Note whether the problem is no hot water, less hot water, an unfamiliar sound, or visible water near the unit. Write down when it began and whether it affects every fixture. Photograph the model label only if safely accessible.

Ask for two clear explanations

Ask the technician to explain the cause and repair scope, then the replacement scope if replacement is proposed. Compare total installed costs, warranty terms, and which underlying problems each option addresses.

When to stop

A suspected gas leak or immediate electrical hazard is not a comparison-shopping problem. Leave the hazardous area and contact the appropriate emergency service or utility. Do not remove covers or attempt fuel, electrical or pressure-system repairs.
