The installation-space checklist

Start with what is safely visible

Before requesting proposals, write down where the heater is located and how a person reaches it. Note stairs, narrow doors, low ceilings or finished surfaces along the route. Take a wide photograph only from a safe, accessible position. Do not move the equipment, open covers or disturb pipes to collect information.

Ask about the whole installation

• Access: Can the old unit be removed and the proposed one brought in without extra work?
• Connections: Which water, fuel, electrical or venting changes are included?
• Surroundings: Does the proposed equipment have the manufacturer-required space and clearances?
• Water management: How will any required condensate or drainage arrangement be handled?
• Finish work: Who repairs walls, floors or other surfaces if the installation affects them?

For a heat-pump proposal

Ask the installer to assess the air conditions and available space against the selected model’s instructions. Discuss operating sound, condensate management and how the unit’s modes will meet household demand. A basement location alone does not establish suitability.

For a change in system type

Switching from a storage tank to tankless, or from one fuel to another, can change the job beyond the appliance itself. Ask for those changes to be separated in the written scope so you can compare a like-for-like replacement with a conversion.

Local requirements belong in the quote

For Buffalo and surrounding municipalities, ask the provider who checks permit and inspection requirements for your property. Keep any required approvals with your installation record. This checklist is preparation for a professional assessment, not an installation specification.
